Research and Fellowship Support

Each year the Lincoln Institute sponsors a wide variety of research projects that are generally organized around a set of land policy topics. This research furthers the exploration of land and tax policy issues and expands the Institute's commitment to cutting-edge land and tax policy research. The Lincoln Institute offers three types of fellowship programs: Visiting Fellowships, Research Fellowships, and Graduate Student Fellowships. These support scholars, practitioners, and graduate students whose work contribute to our knowledge of land and tax policy and develops ideas to guide policy makers throughout the world.

Visiting Fellowships

Each year the Lincoln Institute sponsors a small number of visiting fellows who have special expertise in land and tax policy issues of interest to the Institute. These scholars are invited to undertake research and participate in the Institute's education programs.

Research Fellowships

David C. Lincoln Fellowships in Land Value Taxation
The David C. Lincoln Fellowships in Land Value Taxation (LVT) were established in 1999 to develop academic and professional interest in this topic through support for major research projects. The fellowship program honors David C. Lincoln, founding chairman of the Lincoln Institute, and his long-standing interest in LVT. The program encourages scholars and practitioners to undertake new work in this field, either in the basic theory of LVT or its applications as a component of contemporary fiscal systems in countries throughout the world. The application deadline is September 15, 2009.

Fellowships in Planning and Urban Form
The Department of Planning and Urban Form is interested in planning and the built environment, with a particular focus on three themes: spatial externalities and multi-jurisdictional governance issues; the interplay of public and private interests in the use of land; and land policy, land conservation, and the environment. The fellowships will not be offered in 2008-2009.

China Annual Research Fellowship 中国年度研究基金
Through the newly established Lincoln Institute - Peking University Center for Urban Development and Land Policy, the Institute's Program on the People's Republic of China offers research fellowships to qualified scholars early in their careers to enhance their capacity in land and tax policy fields that address the Institute's primary interest areas in China. Priority topics include urban economics, land use and policy, urban and rural planning, local public finance, and property taxation.

PRC Research Fellows, 2008–2009

Fellowships in African Property Tax Research
The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and the African Tax Institute have begun a comprehensive property tax research project on the African continent, and invite applications for 2009 research fellowships focusing on Anglophone East Africa, Anglophone Southern Africa, North-East Africa, and North-West Africa. The application deadline is November 21, 2008.

Graduate Student Fellowships

Dissertation Fellowship Program
The Lincoln Institute's Dissertation Fellowship Program assists Ph.D. students, primarily at U.S. universities, whose research complements the Institute's interests in land and tax policy. The program provides an important link between the Institute's educational mission and its research objectives by supporting scholars early in their careers. Dissertation fellowship applications are due March 2, 2009. Guidelines for this fellowship program are available below.

Program on Latin America and the Caribbean
The Program on Latin America and the Caribbean offers fellowships to doctoral and master's students. Fellows are encouraged to attend at least one event in which they receive orientation and feedback on their projects. Applications for fellowships in the Program for 2009-2010 will be accepted until July 19, 2009, and selections will be announced in the fall. For more information, contact lac@lincolninst.edu.

China Annual Dissertation/Thesis Fellowship 中国年度研究生奖学金
Through the newly established Lincoln Institute - Peking University Center for Urban Development and Land Policy, the Institute's China Program awards dissertation and master's thesis fellowships to graduate students attending universities in Asia and researching land and tax policy in the People's Republic of China. Fellows participate in a workshop in China to present their proposals and receive comments from an international expert panel.
